Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observances on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. The tourism sector is strategic and it is a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability. It is therefore necessary to reinvigorate the sector as it learns to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic and still strive to make maximum impact for economic growth and sustainable, inclusive development.
The Women in Business and Tourism Nigeria (WIBAT) as part of their program to celebrate the World Tourism Day , organized a conference with the theme: "Women for inclusive Topurism Development," which held at the Barcelona Hotel, Wuse @, Abuja, Nigeria on 27th September, 2021. The High Commissioner, H. E. Dr Benson Alfred Bana was invited to give a good will message at the event. The High commissioner was represented by Mr Philbert B. Peter, Head Economic Diplomacy Affairs and Mrs Edn Obinyan Sylvester, Economic Affairs Officer at the Mission. The High Commission was able to use this forum to invite stakeholders in the tourism industry to participate at the forthcoming East African Tourism Expo, scheduled for October, 2021.
